Miller: Congress must act now to protect the Great Lakes

WASHINGTON – U.S. Congresswoman Candice Miller (MI-10) today urged Congress to quickly act to stop the spread of Asian carp and keep the Great Lakes from being threatened by this invasive species.  Congresswoman Miller is a cosponsor of the Carp Act (H.R. 4472) which will designate the immediate closure of certain Chicago-area locks and develop permanent solutions to stopping the spread of Asian carp.

“Congress must act now to protect the Great Lakes from the Asian carp since the U.S. Supreme Court has decided not act,” said Miller.  “The Great Lakes represent our nation’s most important national treasure and face irreparable harm if the Asian carp is allowed to enter the ecosystem.  President Obama’s Administration has taken small steps to try and keep the carp out of the lakes, but more is required.  Since the Administration will not take the needed steps to protect the lakes, Congress must pass H.R. 4472 which has strong bi-partisan support.”

Due to their aggressive appetites, Asian carp have the potential to dominate ecosystems and alter the food chain.  The U.S Army Corps of Engineers, in conjunction with other governmental entities, has been engaged in efforts to contain Asian carp in the Mississippi River system.
